Our intention is for you to
relax and appreciate this collection of sacred art, painted by
artists from Nepal and Tibet. Literally “scrolled art”,
thangkas are
classic Tibetan Buddhist paintings.
Our artists spend between 1 week and 4
months to create their work. Each thangka is detailed
and enhanced using 24-carat gold. A premier artist paints in your
gallery, available for you to observe.
Thangkas on one wall are framed in a soft fabric brocade,
typical Tibetan style and easy to roll and transport. On the other
wall, thangkas behind glass and wooden frames, give other ideas of
how they may look like in your home.
Lotus Gallery exclusively represents
in Nepal, two Nepali masters. The famous art of Lama Tenzing Norbu from
the Dolpa Region, whose paintings
and life story are featured in the Academy Award nominated film Caravan,
and master thangka painter Prem Lama.
Lotus Gallery now also represents
Tibetan contemporary artists, who previously were unable to sell
their work outside the Peoples Republic of China. Having shown in
galleries in Hong Kong and Beijing, Lotus Gallery has found a wider
audience with collectors in the United States, Europe, and
Australia.
Tibetan
artist Ang Sang, honoring a centuries-old tradition, applies
mineral pigments of turquoise, topaz, lapis and coral, painting in a
contemporary context.
about the owners:
Santosh Gupta has worked with
Tibetan and Nepali art and artists for the past 17 years. Born in a
small town close to Nepal border in India, Santosh moved to Kathmandu
when he was 10 years-old to work in a thangka painting
and crafts gallery.
Santosh's extensive experience has
taught him the necessary business skills, including shipping
regulations and export laws, necessary for exporting to the western
world. He speaks fluent English, Hindu, Nepali and Newari.
Jim Aplington entered the
business of importing Nepali and Tibetan art through divine fate. Having great
affection for a Tibetan orphanage he encountered while trekking in
the Everest region of Nepal near the Tibet border, he returned to the United States
with thangkas to sell in a fund raising effort.
The profits were sent to Nepal to help the
orphanage in October 1998. As the art was well received in the U.S. and
Europe, Jim began importing the art more formally, using Santosh and
his artists. In November 2000, Santosh and Jim opened the Lotus Gallery in
Thamel, the shopping district of Kathamndu.
Lotus Gallery has always supported and encouraged their artists with
high earnings for their work. And, in appreciation for the beautiful peoples of this Himalayan Region,
we donate warm clothing and services for the
disadvantaged. It is because of you, that we are able to
provide for them.
We look forward to seeing you in Nepal. Thank you for your support.
Namaste from your hosts,
Santosh Gupta
Jim Aplington
